Air pollution has long been a problem of concern in Taiwan, whether from the carbon dioxide and pollution generated by Taichung’s thermal power plant, but this is not the main source in fact, rather it is electricity generation and transportation which are most problematic. On the island of Taiwan, where the isthmus is densely populated, and there is only a limited space in which to drive, but there are 14 million scooters and 7 million cars, which is also a high density. At present scooters are in the majority of vehicles on the road, and most of them use diesel, so their emissions are highly polluting, and they adversely affect the entire city’s residents’ health and safety.
